Though I will say that on the original 2DS (the system I use) it feels a little awkward, and even painful at times to use the d-pad. I usually use the d-pad anyway because you’re right, the circle pad doesn’t feel good for 2D GameBoy games. The idea of an all-in-one nature was the greatest benefit I could think of, as I could have generations of libraries accessible in one handheld. Since you can natively play all DS/3DS carts on it and you can install any GB/GBC/GBA rom on it as well. P.S.: The great thing about this method is you can have one device for all your pre-Switch Nintendo Handhelds. Rechargeable battery that lasts awhile, backlit screen, excellent display. But I had a 2DS lying around that I hardly ever used and learned what it could do, and now that’s my Gameboy machine. I was using a GBA with an IPS display I modded myself for awhile and it was good, but the battery life was atrocious.

Install GameBoy/GameBoy Color/ GameBoy Advance roms on there, they show up right on the Home Screen and look/feel amazing to play. I implore you all to do what I did and just get a 2DS or 3DS (depending on what form factor/screen size you’d like I suppose) and install custom firmware on it.
